Diabetes

My doctor says my sugar levels are to high (50) and I'm due an eye scan in September since my blood test in April I have given up bread and potato knocked desserts on the head drinking plenty of water and lost a stone going for another blood test Monday, can anyone recommend tips for reducing sugar levels I would really appreciate it

Basic calculation for wanting to lose weight and therefore control diabetes is:
calories in < calories out
However there are caveats to that depending on when you eat, portion size, individual metabolism etc.
For me portion size is/was the biggest barrier to losing weight. I'm not particularly active but I eat fairly healthily but I love my food so I'm a bit rotund. But since I watched my portion size and stopped eating just before bedtime I'm less of a fat bustard than I was.

If you're really serious massively reduce the carbs.
It *all* turns to sugar, ignore the bit on nutrition labels about "Of which sugars", that's not that relevant. Starchy carbs like potatoes and breads, ditch them if you can, ditto pastas etc.
But whatever you do . . . don't stress over it . . . that causes spikes too!

Move away from full fat coke and other soft drinks. Cut down on cakes, sweets etc. Exercise a little more.

Worth noting that Coke Zero and other sugar-free fizzy drinks with artificial sweeteners are bad - they cause a spike too. I’ve switched to kombucha, which has helped.

Mine board last week however I have lost a lot of weight in recent years which has normally helped me with numbers as low as 5.

Good luck with it all. I don’t know if you’ve been offered it, but when I was diagnosed in 2017 I was sent on a food nutrition course by the NHS which was very helpful. The main advice - which it sounds like you’re following - is to be sensible. Don’t panic and crash diet, as that doesn’t work. Replace the obvious junk food, do exercise if you can and you should be ok. If sweet treats are a weakness, I’d recommend Oppo or Halo Top ice-cream, very low in calories and sugars. Lentil crisps rather than regular crisps. Everyone is different, but you’ll hopefully find a way that works for you.

There are the obvious baddies like cakes and sweets but look at the less obvious ones that you wouldn't necessarily think of as having high sugar content. As Outsider said, check nutritional content on labels. Fruit contains more sugar than you might think but its a difficult one as it's generally healthy and you have to eat something.

I still want to have the odd beer and a tipple of red wine and I know a lot of soft drinks are not great for you(fructose) but I didn't consider sauces at all cheers Trevor

Yes, those jars of pasta sauces, curry sauces etc are packed full of sugar. As a general rule, cut out processed foods as much as you can. Choose the right breakfast cereal (oatiflakes and oatibiscuits are good) or even switch to a mushroom omelette 3 or 4 times a week for breakfast. Eat early evening , and no snacking.The truth is out there. I only offer opinion.

He's spot on about the sauces. Not just your Toomy K, brown sauce but have a look at the sauces you use when doing pasta etc. Aldi do some 'healthier' ones which are good.

Drink plenty of plain water & avoid inactivity when your sugar levels are high - opposite when low (sugary drinks & take it easy). 50 is very high - my wife ended up in a&e first time her sugars reached 30! The finger prick meters are good but a lot of faffing about compared to a Libre sensor. A little disc you wear on your arm & it connects to your phone by bluetooth & then your phone can send the detail to any number of other phones over the internet. Gives constant monitoring & you can set low & high levels when it will set an alarm on all phones ringing. Each phone can set their own levels or turn off the alarms. Available on NHS.

As Kbot says, it sounds like you're referring to HbA1c readings - over 42 means that you are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes rather than necessarily actually having it. A diabetic should be aiming to get down to 48 or lower although this target can sometimes increase as you get older because of other potential risks which outweigh the benefits.

I’ve had type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. I was very nervous when I was first told.There are a few tests. Fingers, fasting, but the main measure is the HbA1c. Normally done every six months, might be three if just diagnosed, this checks and compares how your body is able to deal with sugar, and how the lifestyle changes are making are having an impact. I started by controlling it through diet but as I got older needed tablets to help. Welcome to middle age!

I think it’s just a symptom of modern day living. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. I’d I imagine a very high percentage of blokes in their 50s are on medication for at least one of those ?

Mrs O has taken Metformin (it seems to be a different brand name every time she gets a new lot) twice a day for as long as I can remember.
Last time I had a blood test, the reading was 43. 42 to 48 is generally classed as NDH (Non-Diabetic Hyperglycaemia). I was just advised to try to change diet and get more exercise to get it back down to 42 or lower.

Type ll for 20 odd years. Fairly well controlled, odd lapse. I only drink the odd bottle of Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5%. Told it was one of the least sugar content of the low/no alcohol beers. Tastes ok to me. But then again I used to get them to put some Vindaloo sauce in my Mulligatawny soup at the Light of India, back of the Arndale. My taste is shot.
