Growing up in Luton, that park was always known as People’s Park by everyone - never heard it referred to as Bell’s Close. Can remember playing football there often, sometimes on snowy ground! Did the walk through Wardown Park, up Pope’s meadow into People’s Park on many an occasion.“Control the controllables”

I've always known it as Bells Close. I think that Bells Close and Popes Meadow together are called Peoples Park.

There's an arch on the Kingston Road side which says "welcome to Bell's Close." I went to St. Matthews school and it was always called Bell's Close - our sports ground and football home ground.
The first mention of Bell Close in the newspapers is 1868. Here's a notice of an event in 1887 from the boarding school, Norton College which was on the corner of Havelock Road and North Street (still standing but converted to flats).

Ok, thanks, that’s interesting. I went to Hitchin Road Junior school and we used to hold our school sports days there (This would have been in the late fifty’s and sixty’s) and went there a lot in the seventy’s. As I say, only ever knew it as People’s Park, but the memory may be playing tricks.“Control the controllables”

I lived in High Town Road, and also went to Hitchin Road infants and Junior Schools leaving in 1963. I always knew it as People's Park but was aware that it was also known as Bell's Close.

We must be fairly similar ages. I was living in Ramridge Road (off Round Green) and also went to Hitchin Road infant and junior schools. I also left around 1963 but due to a house move and transferred to Denbigh Road juniors.“Control the controllables”

No problem at all. History sometimes gets warped for various reasons so it should be challenged. The 1879 map attached shows how big People's Park is. If you were meeting someone or playing a match then you needed "Popes Meadow" or "Bells Close" to narrow it down. The hill you mention was known as Pepper Hill - now Havelock Road, Wensleydale and Havelock Rise.
St. Matthews School amalgamated with Hitchin Road in 1967 - we moved to Hitchin Road (Charles Street) from Havelock Road in the first year of Juniors.
