Sold the dream

I won't ever stop supporting Town or buying my season ticket but something has changed that has left me totally unenthused by the club this year.
The lame and avoidable relegation and the mismanagement on the part of the board have pushed a few people I know away. I know it's always a rollercoaster with Town and I've loved the ups and downs for 30 years but losing faith with 2020 really hurts. They saved this club but now they look like many other boards who barely care about the football and all about the business or the new ground at least. We need a new ground to secure our future but thats a massive project and they need to let real football people in and not pretend its just a game of Football Manager.
All the usual kit and merchandise gripes are resurfacing same as every year and we still can't get it right. We look a bit of a joke when everyone will want to beat us, the premier leauge team from two years ago.
Maybe I am being naive when I thought the premier League promotion was the start of something amazing and revolutionary for our club. I don't feel that way today. secured some cash but why should the fans suffer the crap we saw last year and be told to be grateful to still have a club at all?
Shoot me down, tell me to go and support the scum, what ever but I can tell you the happyclappers need to wake up and demand results on and off the pitch early in the season or power court will be empty if it even happens.

Your relationship with the club is like any other relationship. It goes through highs and lows, sometimes linked to the performance of the club, sometimes not. A bit like a marriage, for better, or worse, the only difference being I'm not sure a true fan can ever divorce their club.
"they look like many other boards who barely care about the football"... which boards, can you give examples of other clubs you mean by that? As for not caring about the football, I think it's pretty obvious it hurts Gary Sweet every bit as much as it hurts all of us when things go wrong.--------------- Make burgers wider, not taller

This post is not, in any way, intended as belittling mental health issues but it gives an opportunity for people to "get things off their chest" and just have a chat.

It sounds like a fantastic initiative - but rather than using the link as a direct response to someone's opinion about the club - that loads of people have disagreed with - why not just start a new thread?
Particularly when one of the other posters has already suggested the OP needs to seek 'counselling' because they obviously 'have an issue'.
Then I'd genuinely believe that it wasn't being used to make a point, wasn't belittling mental health issues - and was actually being posted for the concern and well being of our fans.

It was mentioned in my post as a genuine concern and consideration for our fellow supporter and I mentioned experiencing many ups and downs the club I have experienced over the years that I have supported them. This was intended to reassure. No attempt was made to belittle mental health issues, if anyone has read my post as meaning otherwise then you have my heartfelt apologies.

Maybe you should seek counselling as you obviously have an issue. And again it is possible that we may climb back up into the Championship which is a good effort for a club of our size. We have a new ground to look forward to and then we will be in a much healthier state. Having watched and supported Luton since the 1940s I am of course used to the ups and downs between leagues and despite the mistakes of last year I can say categorically that the club is being run by people who support the club and want to succeed. So chin up and enjoy the roller coaster that is the hatters.

Yep, as a club we have made a few mistakes which was inevitable. Impossible to get every decision right. Luckily the good has been so much better than the bad. We move on.

How did you suffer?
Did Gary Sweet poison your Norms? Did David Wilkinson puke in your beer? Did Rob Edwards kill your family?
Or did somebody just laugh when they saw you in a two year old nylon football shirt?
I first went in 1969 and we're now in exactly the same position (league wise) as we were then. We haven't just gone the full circle, we've completed 3 figure of eights. UP DOWN LUTON TOWN, it happens, some of it has been joyous, a lot of it has been mundane, but nobody has ever suffered.

I felt the same for the past few weeks to be honest, and have had not the slightest interest who has gone out or who has come in.
And the thoughts of going to places like Stevenage again, I have to admit , give me no reason to get excited, and in fact coupled with the expense, means I will give away days a swerve this season.
However, the most important thing for this club is this ground, to me it’s almost more important than promotion or relegation. Without the club will die.
I see the ongoing work down there and hopefully I will still be around to watch our first game there. It’s getting closer.
Season ticket is bought and no doubt when I sit down in my seat against Wimbledon all will be well.
Some on hear will bleat about colour of shirts, and not having one to buy tomorrow…, have a word with yourselves.

The season starts far too early even if no relegation i doubt people would be massively excited about a 1st August kO
Re: Sold the dream

Stevenage isn't one to get excited about, however looking back Spurs, Arsenal, City and Brighton were all crap as well.
Exactly that. Some of our best days out were at places like Alfreton and Kidderminster. Quite alot of the PL away days weren't great. One of the few positives about being back in the 3rd division is going on the piss with mates, having a laugh in some obscure town you'd never normally visit. If the day is rudely interrupted by 90 minutes of shite football, then so be it. Away days are far more than what happens on the pitch.

But at least we will go to away games this season hoping (maybe even expecting) to win which was rarely the case in the PL.

Clearly you can say whatever you want, nobody is stopping you.
We all wanted it to be better than it was over the last season and a half because yes, by fuck it has been shit with criticism well deserved and discussed at length.
We have to hope that lessons have been learned etc. Time will tell.
You also seem to be under the misapprehension that you were 'sold a dream'. Nobody forced you to buy a ticket or believe that success would continue forever, but you do you.

I've posted what I think about people's entitled overreaction to one bad season, countless times. Whatever I say, you'll disagree. So I don't see the point.
He's entitled to feel that way. It's only an 'entitled overreaction' in your opinion. It's perfectly fine that He's so utterly pissed off, just as it's fine if you want to continue with the blinkers on, clapping away.

It's not really the reaction to one bad season though is it?
Plenty of people feel less connected and maybe that's partly age and also the price of succcess.
Outlaws sponsored a couple of games back in day and i seem to think it was about 5 to 600 quid from memory. Not huge money but things like that make people feel part of /closer to the club.
Now it's 3 grand for basically same level of football to sponsor a game
Re: Sold the dream
Posted by Zobra The Greek on 24/7/2025, 10:50:39, in reply to "Re: Sold the dream"
That's the price of modern football. The price of modern life. It's shit. I'm not a fan. But name a football club where this is not the case? Maybe there are some. Maybe the LTFC could do better. I thought the away ticketing plans when we got to the PL were a shit show. There are lots of other things I haven't agreed with. I've emailed 2020, and I've emailed the TO and had explainations. Again, I haven't always agreed with these explainations, but you'd be hard pressed to find many other clubs where you'll even get that.
People are only complaining like this now because we've been losing for 24 months. Things weren't much different 3 years ago in terms of what you're talking about, but people were lauding 2020 for being the best owners in the world.
