Very much this. I, for one, have a "career" that will never "pay" much more than about the national average salary. Obviously there are other benefits such as housing etc but we get no, or at best limited, choice in that but sometimes people don't always just chase the financial aspect of a career. Clergy as such, are often cash poor, but live in probably oversized houses for their means in terms of bills, redecoration etc. and therefore will likely have very little inheritance to share with their offspring even before the government gets its hands on it.
Some clergy have had no careers beforehand whilst others have had good careers. Other's have spouses who continue in a high-salaried career. Whilst wealthy clergy certainly exist, there is also a significant amount of clergy poverty in both serving and retirement.
Teenagers today need to think long and hard about their financial futures before deciding ion a career path.
