I don’t agree with those saying Wilshere was a failed experiment. He proved in the second half of last season that he could learn quickly. We had the adaptable style to grind out results when needed.
To me, the concern isn’t appointing Wilshere in the first place. He seemed to get the club, and Palmer was a brilliant signing. Nobody wanted him gone in the summer. The question is, why have we gone backwards so far?
Recruitment seems part of it: none of the players are individually bad singings, but can they gel? Let’s not pretend anyone didn’t want us to get Palmer and Lawrence back, nor keep Walsh and Clark.
The worry is, having had a pre-season we’ve so far tactically gone backwards. Why, I don’t know. It’s maddening seeing Kodua not get a proper chance.
There are positives, like Ashby and Marshall. Donley and Gore have shown signs of why we got them in. But Odoffin and Palmer have massively gone backwards. We need a proper captain. It’s stupid that Johnston and Odoffin are behind Naismith, Wells and Walsh.
Equally, Wilshere was a quick learner last season. And at a guess, he’ll learn again during the break. After correcting what went wrong, he’s earned the right to prove that.
