From what I understand, crime levels are relatively low by historic standards and the reason for the overcrowding crisis is because there has been political pressure for judges to give more and longer prison sentences - e.g. sentences for robbery in 2023 were 13 months longer on average than in 2012. So there's not more crime, just the same number of criminals (or lower) getting banged up for longer.

That said, you're right of course that the levels of violence in society remain unacceptable and hard to comprehend. I was in A&E the other week - obviously nobody is having their best day but the amount of men looking like they were about to kick off was really striking. Just chill out lads alright?
