In Buddhism hell state is the lowest of the 10 worlds, ie number 1.

Heaven state is the 6th of the 10 worlds.

These 'worlds' are actually life states, and we can experience any of the 10 worlds at any given moment with the other 9 diminished.

So you could flick from hell state (the worst) straight to Buddhahood (the best) in a single moment, and vice versa, or any other of the 10 worlds.

That's the 10 worlds concept from Buddhism.

But I also remember reading about different levels (or intensities I suppose) of hell. The one I can remember easiest was called the Avichi Hell, which I think was one of the worst states of hell possible.
