The article in the Notts County programme by Brian Swain is an interesting read, which was only a few days after the Kohlerdrome had been refused and the subsequent decision by David Kohler to resign. That decision was made because the then Secretary of State for the Environment, John Prescott, had decided that most Road schemes would be scrapped, including widening the M1 to 4 lanes south of Luton. Since the Planning Inspector who oversaw the Public Inquiry only felt that Junction 10 could cope with the increased traffic going to the proposed ground if this work was carried out that scuppered the scheme. A few years later the Labour Party reversed that decision and the 4 lanes were built. How history might have been, but for that original policy switch ?.
