I think suggesting that there was Nothing wrong with the system that applied for decades, 2 up and 2 down is pushing it a bit. The amount of dead rubber games waa large which meant decreased attendances.

Everything changes over time.

Also the National League ser up is great inasmuch as it offers a genuine home advantage to the team that finishes higher.
