2 big matches have taken place on this day, both of which provide great memories of what being an LTFC fan is all about. The first took place 32 years ago when we played Newcastle at home in a 4th Round replay and won 2-0, with goals from John Hartson & Scott Oakes. In the final season of the Kenilworth Road being a terrace my recollection of leaping up and down when we scored both the goals and swaying around as each attack gathered momentum still remain fresh in my memory. For youngsters today the only comparable feeling must be for those whose music involves dancing in a “ mosh pit”.
16 years on and another all time favourite match takes place, with a 2-1 win at home to Oxford Utd. With the match going in to injury time we were 1-0 down, but equalised with a George Pilkington header. However, the game will forever be remembered for the injury time goal scored direct from a corner by Keith Keane and the subsequent red card as he celebrated the winning goal with fans in the Kenilworth Road end. Probably as dramatic a finale directly involving a Luton born player, as has ever occurred at a home game in our history ?
Only one player has been born on this day and that is Tommy McKechnie in 1940.
5 players have made their debut on this day. The first was 125 years ago, when Albert Street played against West Ham in a 1901 Southern League away game. Following his debut it was to be another 51 years before the next player, Peter Stone was to make his debut. The most significant debut of the five took place on this day in 1957, when our 1959 FA Cup final player and subsequent manager Allan Brown played his first match for us in a 2-1 away win at Leeds. The last 2 debuts on this day were George Beavan in 2008 and Jason Cummings in 2017.
