It wasn't just a tree. It was a part of our landscape that was iconic and had significant meaning for a lot of people.

Not doling out a significant sentence for this action would then set a precedent that would for example let someone off with community service for destroying the cenotaph.

If we don't at least try and protect things that mean something to people in this country then we might as well give up valuing anyone or anything.

Also, despite filming themselves doing the deed and having exchanged messages talking about it afterwards and knowing full well the prosecution would be using this evidence the fucking idiots caused you and me the needless expense of a trial when their guilt was obvious. If they'd admitted they'd done it and shown some remorse, the sentence would be a lot shorter. Fuck em.
