1902 Diary found in Alexandra Mount.

Litherland History was recently given a 1902 diary which was found many years ago in the ruins of a demolished house in Alexandra Mount. It was written in pencil and very hard to read but something on every day. Ed said he would scan it and enhance the writing and then asked for volunteers to transcribe it. Six of us took on the challenge and had two months each. I have now completed my two months I took November and December and I did a few days at a time and have now finished. It has been so interesting I have given myself the job of trying to find all the people mentioned in the Diary. I am using the 1901 Census for this, this census has given us the name of the author as no name was in the diary and the siblings were only an initial. We found that it was the Isaac's family of Number 7, Alexander Mount.

The parents are Samuel Isaacs 56 and Agnes Ann 49 and the children were Agnes Mabel 24, Margaret Winefred 23, Samuel Charles 22, Mary Edith 20, and Isabel Rose 13.

The Diary mentioned the family by the Initials and we realised that they were the second names and not the first names which were rarely used. So we had W. C, E and R and the I we thought was Isabel was the I for Agnes Mabel.

I will put a copy of 12th and 13th Decembeer for you to see. And then show you my transcription.

I lived just across the road from the mount 75 sefton rd,loved ridding up and down there on are bikes,never any complaints from the residents we know how to behave,

other side of the road from Isaac was the haunted house,house damaged during the war,we woukd dare each other to go in and go up the stairs,only once when a big boy went with us,silly of us really but we were quite safe,

Miss Winifred Isaacs (Artist/Teacher)

I put the post below on the board last year.

I did some research on the family at the time, Samuel (father) died in 1932 aged 88, he is buried in Kirkdale Cemetery, the service was held at St. Philip's.

All the siblings remained single.

Samuel died at Walton Hospital and left his estate of £2634 15s. 7d. to Winifred.

Ronnie would you be Ok if I copy these photos and information. I am doing a bit of a story about the Diary and it's contents to add to the completed translation. There are so many names mentioned in it, and it would be great to add some details on the Litherland people who were involved in the life of the family.

Her painting in the house where lovely ,from what a can remember mostly seanes of old Litherland,a very gifted family,in the bedroom was a beautifull Dolls house,there was also a window that looked over the stairs,I think
he dolls house was really a large cupboard,

Think I must have started piano lession when I was about 10 year old 1948, 1952 my Gran died so i stopped,I am sure i had lessions so I kept Gran company till uncle got home,I did show her to play God save the KIng,by putting bits of paper above the keys,

1902 - DECEMBER - 13TH - SATURDAY

I took note and C's bill to Mr Lander this morn and went to Mrs Boyers for eggs, saw her and Marion, brought a book back and a note from her asking Mama to lend “Plain Jane” for Minnie to read, so I took it and some others this afternoon. Saw Mr A ????? one of Muriel Bartlett's brothers. Miss Williams finished this morn. Mrs Kaufmann came home with W. and E. from class but could not stay.

1902 - DECEMBER - 14TH - SUNDAY

C.and I to church morning and evening. A Stranger preached this morning. Mr Lander preached evening text Matt X1 10. Mr Fraser here also read himself in (Mr. J. Jones) ????
W. C and I to school. Rosie got a cold so I went and told Miss Whitehead.

Well done Eileen, absolutely fascinating. A real glimpse of everyday life! I'm sure the Museum of Liverpool would love to know about this project.

Eileen what year did the brother die,I am sure they had his body in the room next to the room I had my lession in,and there was a door between each room,only there just before the funeral

I went there for piano lession about 1949 2 sister and a brother,and a house full of cats and kitten,I love it when she left the room,I would pick up the magnifying glass and inspect all the painting the teacher and her sister had done,When I was home on holiday 1969 I took my son for a walk,could have cried to see the house, books painting thrown in the front garden,wish i had been brave enough to have rescued one,

That is brilliant that Norma that you remember them and I'll be able to add your comments to the story behind the Diary. I Haven't checked their deaths yet but I have traced them up to the 1939 so I'll do some more research to find that. The family were always at St Philip's church and Mr Lander the vicar is mentioned and also Mr Fraser and Mr H Jackson. The girls seemed to run classes in St Philips as Agnes mentions my children and they were very friendly with Miss Pride a Mrs Boyer and Marion and Mrs Bowie, I have traced them but quite a few more to do as I haven't finished my research on the people in November and December yet. I'll find their deaths and be back when I have them. If you've got any more information on them I'd be gratreful I have copied the 1901 Census for all the houses in Alexandra Mount

Brilliant work Eileen. That handwriting looks pretty tricky to decipher too. It will be great to see the finished product!

Norma I have copied all your comments on the Isaacs and your memories of them, it will add more interest to the story so Thank You. I mentioned you remembering things to my Friend Doreen, she knows you, she was Doreen Yates now Lambert and she lived in Parr Street. She also has some memories of the Isaacs so I'll have to get her memories written down as well. Any other memories you have about your childhood in Litherland will be interesting and could add to the information about the area. Doreen is 97 and will be 98 next month and thougfh she is frail she gets out most days, Church, the Pensioners Club, and the History Society and other things.

I remember Doreen and her sister they were friend s of my Cousin Sheila Dickinson,When Doreen had her baby girl Nicola we kids thought it a very moderm name,during the war Bob lambert sister stayed with Sheila family 79 Sefton rd,I think the mother was staying in Alexander mount,when the left London,
