This curious letter was unearthed recently. The writer is Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Seddon. She was the sister of William Seddon who lived in Sefton Road, and he was my grandmother’s father. I hope that makes sense!
I think the letter was written when Lizzie was an elderly lady and it’s a little confusing. The Silkstone pit that she refers to was near Barnsley and opened in the 1850s. If the accident occurred about 100 years previously then the letter was written in the 1940s or 1950s, when Lizzie was in her 80s or 90s.
What became of the possible inheritance is unknown but it seems I might have been a bit wealthier than I actually am!
That's intriguing Pete. Wills and stuff can be traced can't they? I think wills are avalable for public scrutiny, although I don't have any knowledge of the subject.
If you do look in to it Pete please keep us updated, it's really interesting.
Interesting to read old letters,I used to love to read my Grandfathers will and his wifes will, she died 14 year after him end of November 1952, thought if they hadnt had 8 children, just my Mum we would be well off,and have the house on Hatton Hill road,
Did you ever find the death of Kohn Hardman? Worth a bit of research but doubtful you could claim anything as you are too far down the line. Just be interesting if you could find the probate and will.
After my husbands sudden death I had to go to an office in Cardiff he hadn't made a will, so i had to prove I was his wife,Probate,Needed to have the house put in my name,
