Went to linacre mission for keep fit for a few weeks about 1953,only in the summer months when the evenings where light,but went to a school down there for cooking lesions,had money to the bus when going home,

Wish I'd got in touch with you before Februarys History presentation, I did it on the shops on Linacre Road in the 40s to 60's but struggled to find photos of the shops. I remember lots of the names of the shops as I lived in Bowden Street from birth till I moved in 1971. It went well though and many of the members added to the names of the shops. It was entitled Employment opportunites in the 49's and 60's so Richmonds, Lewis's, Sturlas, Johnson's and Vernons etc were also mentioned. Most of the factories and bigger employment sites have disappeared and many of the over 70 shops on Linacre Road have been converted into flats. Lovely to see your photos although they are much later so many of the shops have gone.

Shops from the 1950s on Linacre Road I remember: Trapnells, Mellors, Cox's Chemist, Cowans, Batterby's, Teds, Clarks/Agars(Icee), Co-op, Bills, Arthurs(barber), Bonton, Mabels, Chandlers (can't recall the name) Liggets, Kings, Toners, Masons, Booths, Tolls, Herb Shop, Chrsytoids, Costigans, Sayers, Armstrongs, Freeman Hardy & Willis, Maypole, Sturlas

Hi Ronnie some shops that i remember. Rosses ( I worked there) both as order boy, then as a shop assistant, Irwin’s, think Appletons was the Chandlers
Jack, Pies chippy,Pooles, I think Harris on the corner of Lander Road men’s clothes,Samples , can’t be sure but the Cobler between lander and Blisworth st he stood for Council, Johnson’s corner of Blisworth St, Dewhurst butchers,,
Fishshop next door to Rosses, Johnson’s dyers on the same block had a shop, that will,do for now. Cheers

Trapnell’s lived in Stanley Park. The bottom end nearest the park . The daughters name was Linda.

I think Battersby was a nice bakers I think on the opposite corner Pooles on Beachwood Rd, they made wet Nellie’s very well, we were well supplied with nice cake makers. Cheers
