1st LC Smith Purchase

I’m trying to purchase a LC Smith Field model. Is there a way to tell the age just looking at the serial number. I’d like to purchase a gun that with a little TLC can be used upland hunting. The one shotgun I’m looking at is a serial number above 400000. Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Did you add an additional 0? There were no Hunter Arms guns with 400,000 SNs. The Field grades started at about 216XXX

Thanks for the information. After reviewing the "what to look for" information I’m thinking I should probably start searching at all the local shows and shops. I was looking at a gun online.

Dr. Drew, the LC Smith Production Records book by Dr. Stubbendieck shows a group of 16 gauge guns built in 1915 in serial number range 400,000 to 401,758. Can someone clear up this discrepancy? Thanks, Tom
