Cocking Rod Falls Out

Gentlemen, I just bought a 1914 Ideal Grade 12ga, with 32" barrels choked a tight Improved Mod, with a Curtis Forend. Overall, the gun is about 85%. The right cocking rod will fall out of the receiver when pointing downward. The gun functions as intended using snap caps. It will cock and fire every time. Question 1, what holds the cocking rod in place? Question 2, I'm guessing I have to remove the side plate? Question 3, in this condition is it safe to shoot? I bought this one to shoot trap. The cocking rod is held in place by the lifter, which is press fit and peened. Yes, it needs to be fixed, and certainly the gun deserves a check and clean by a qualified Smith expert

I assume if loose it could be held in place by the head of the stock

Fred the cocking rod is held in place by the lifter which is peened at the end of the cocking rod. Very possible the lifter was replaced and not peened to keep it from coming off the cocking rod.
You will have to take the lock plate off and then you can see what is happening. You will have to put the receiver vertical with the cocking rod held firmly in a vice or a way that the cocking rod will not move. A center punch placed between the lifter and cocking rod and struck with a hammer in a few places will keep the cocking rod and lifter in place.
