Hunting Style

I came across some very dapper outfits for the well dressed upland bird hunter to sport! Interested in your comments?

Doug, most of the pictures looked to be European hunting, at pegs where you could "dress up". When I was pheasant, quail and woodcock hunting years ago, those clothes would not last an hour going through brambles, multiflora rose and other brush that would tangle you up. Off the top of my head I can't remember the brand but they had leather fronts that came up to the front pockets, also had long zippers to get into with boots on. The only bad thing is once you got through the gnarly stuff it got you on the back of the legs. Still have the later version that doesn't have the leather fronts.

Thanks David for your insight. I would assume that leather faced hunting trousers would be very heavy. Here are some new pictures of a hunting style that is decidedly more American. Heavy, thick wool in classic red and black plaid patterns. They were primarily used in the northeast & north-central US for big game hunting (deer & elk) in heavy snow at times called a “Pennsylvania Tuxedo”. Most popular in during the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

The pictures near the end are of a pair of these hunting pants under the brand name “Emergency Garment”, which was actually made by Woolrich. I found them at a local thrift store and they fit me. It took several months for me to find an “Emergency Garment” coat on EBay with the matching plaid pattern in my size. Finding a hat that matches the plaid pattern exactly has been difficult. LL Bean’s Maine Hunting Shoe has always had a 16 inch version to accommodate these laced pant legs.

Doug I think the reason the plaid wool, mainly from Woolrich, was so popular back then was when wet it still kept you warm and that is why deer hunters liked it. This was before Gortex. I'm not a deer hunter so I cannot say about how the clothing was but I'm sure it was warm.

I’m a deer killer and always thought it would be neat to have a red and black plaid hunting coat and pants until I tried some on . For me atleast they were a fair bit heavier than the more modern synthetic camo stuff I typically wear .
