L.C. Smith Double Barrel shotgun SN# 60263

One of my buddies purchased an old car and discovered a old double barrel shotgun in the trunk. He asked me if it worked and was safe to use. I found it rusty and required a good cleaning. While doing this I found it was made by L.S. Smith with a PATD JUNE 1.80, and a "O" in front of the serial number of 60263. It's a 12 gauge. Anyway the problem is it is missing the firing pins and firing pin bushings. I was wondering if anyone out there sells replacing firing pins and firing pin bushings? my direct email is navy.senior.chief.marine@gmail yes I'm a retired senior chief corpsman and yes I was also a Marine sergeant.

Welcome Thomas: you have the remains of a No. 0 made about 1895. The No. 0 was introduced in 1894, initially with Twist but by at least 1898 'Good 2 Rod Damascus'. Do you have the barrels?

That may explain why the bushings and pins were removed.
There have been bushings and firing pins offered on ebay, but there are no bushings listed now. They would require fitting.

The gun certainly would not be 'safe to shoot' until it has been evaluated by a double gun specialist with the interest, equipment (bore scope and wall thickness gauge) and expertise to properly do so.

60263 is a 16 gauge made in 1897.
Even if you found a pair of used bushings there is a good chance that they will not fit as the bushings were all hand fit to each barrel.

As this gun is an early 16-bore and manufactured on what LC Smith described as a Regular Frame, if you don't have the original barrels the possibility is remote that you'll find a suitable replacement set. Most 16 bore Smiths were made using barrels designed for the Featherweight frame, and the barrels are not interchangeable between frame sizes. As difficult and costly as certain good, conditioned parts are to find, you'd probably be dollars ahead to sell your frame and stock for parts and purchase a complete gun in good condition.

I am confused more than normal.The OP states he cleaned the shotgun and the owner asked if it was safe to shoot ? He doesn't show barrels but I believe by his post Barrels are present.He is missing firing pins and bushings. Am I correct?? or am I missing something here ?

Thomas: Another thing I will add (at the risk of being kicked off of here).When it comes to screws and springs and a lot of other things Double gun related . Louis Rotelll is the real deal ! One of the finest I have ever met !
