They are two different things. The joint check is on the bottom of the barrel lug and fits into the receiver that has two slots milled into it. The rotary bolt was used from the beginning to the end of production and is located in the receiver and is operated by the top lever. The joint check was stopped in 1899 and actually let the barrels open farther to take out the shells.
