My Uncle’s LCS Syracuse 10 Bore Hammer Gun
Hi guys. I haven’t done much on the forum since making the move from Richmond, VA to Denver, CO. Still in an apartment until our house is finished being built with all my Elsie’s in storage until January.
I recently visited my uncle and aunt in Utah while there on business and they surprised me with the L.C. Smith Syracuse 10 bore hammer gun we had talked about for years. The serial number is 11527, which I believe makes it from 1884 (or 1885?) and one of the first 12,000 guns made by the new shotgun company (I’ll bet David W. knows the answer to that one)?
My uncle purchased it from a pawn shop in Lake Tahoe more than 25 years ago and has actually fired it a couple of times. It is a F or Field grade, with virtually no engraving or ornamentation. I am looking to restore it to its close to original state if possible, especially since it has been so abused and is such a low grade. If you feel that there is some reason to not restore it, please let me know so I better understand.
You will notice from the pictures when I post them that it is in very, very rough shape from muzzle to butt. Much rougher than I remember. I will be providing pictures of each part of the gun (stock, action/hammers, barrels and fore end) separately over the next week or so to ask your advice on restoration tips and concerns if you have any to share.
Thank you for indulging me as I am very excited to start work on this new project gun. Very best regards, - Doug
