Tom, I cannot help in that area as I have never taken apart a gun that had no safety. I can say that I also believe as you do, that all live bird/pigeon guns were ordered that way with no opening slot filled in but rather having a solid area where a safety would have been.
I have handled James C. Hunter's Monogram grade that was a live bird gun and have taken the locks off but that is a far as I went. This gun is shown on the 1918 L.C. Smith calendar that Jent P. Mitchell III has again so graciously done.
