Thanks to Bro. David and others. It appears about 1898 Hunter Arms began milling the notch in the top and bottom ribs for grades ABOVE No. 00 & 0 and post-1913 Field and Ideal. This is interesting; a Crown with SSP rib with no notch on top rib, notch on bottom rib, and barrels not quite touching
It seems the embellishment lasted through production, but if someone has an uncut later Trap or above grade without the notch please post the DOM and grade.
