I'd check the plate for a serial number; and if I failed to find the plate numbered to the gun, I'd err on the side of caution and consider the piece after-market. Personally, I don't recall having ever seen a solid steel butt plate on an LC Smith; doesn't mean there's no example out there, only that I've never seen an example.
