I saw a 16 gauge field grade at the Southern described to me as having been shipped with original 27" barrels; fortunately Jim S. was there with the Smith shipping records and those factory records showed this gun having been originally shipped with 28" barrels. So to answer your questions, yes Hunter Arms did ship a few special order guns with odd length barrels; BUT the only way to separate fact from allegation is to request a factory letter from Jim Stubbendieck. If this gun were verified as being original 27" barrels, it would certainly be a rare, valuable, and collectable piece; but without verification all you have is speculation. A verification letter authenticating the odd barrel length would be invaluable; and if it were to show the barrels having been cut, then the owner never has to worry about being accused of misrepresentation; so it's still very valuable.
