    If it was previously owned by Fred Kimble or otherwise has value beyond the average 00, I would leave it completely original.
    However if it's a working gun and that was my reason for owning it the length of pull would be of more importance.
    To my eye a recoil pad mounted to a flat butt is what looks correct. 80 grit adhesive paper on a flat surface like a granite countertop will make it happen fast. Hold the stock low, perpendicular to the surface, don't let it rock or chatter and it will come out very flat.
