Dave, upon opening the gun after firing, the hammer/s are starting to re-cock and the ejector/s are starting to eject. If using snap caps and firing one or both barrels, by the time the extractor gets to the firing pin/s they should move freely out of the way.
To check this, open and close gun, take for-end off, take barrels off, get a block of wood to fit across the breech opening. Release top lever to center, push safety off, fire both triggers against the block of wood and now see if the tip/s are firm or loose. If loose that is a good indication that the firing pin is broken.
To re-cock, use a 4" adjustable on the cocking arms.
