If a customer wanted to spend the extra cash, he could certainly order upgraded checkering on his Pigeon Grade Smith gun. Some years ago I featured in the Double Gun Journal a special order PE Grade 2-barrel set with finely cut fleur-di-les checkering and ribbon work equivalent to at least Monogram quality. That gun was ordered with lots of non-standard PE Grade features to include a pointing dog on each lock plate; but it's stock grade designation was stamped "PE" and not "M". Depending on gun grade, a customer could always order special features; and another example is the Grade 3E Smith over there in Tuscaloosa ordered with fleur-di-les checkering and ribbon work equivalent to what one might see on a Monogram quality Smith gun.
