John Liles and I have been discussing these Cheek Piece SBTs off-line, and I am intrigued by both the number produced and the quality of this particular 1940 SBT, particularly after reading Tom Breedens post. This gun is 100% original (as far as I can tell), with the exception of a poorly installed Pachmayr white line, and two 1" X 2" deep holes drilled in the stock. John surmises that they were weight pockets to adjust balance. The quality of the work on this 1940 gun is similar to what I have on my pre-13 vintage guns. The carving of the cheek piece, using the shadow design, is quite sharp and not what I would expect in a 40's gun. I have sent Jim a application for a research letter to hopefully learn more. Maybe I will learn it was the last SBT to roll of the line; certainly the last Specialty SBT with a check piece! Sorry for the large format and vertical orientation....photo bucket is giving me fits.
