Nick, you are correct about the gun being older, it is from 1884-85. Most of these Syracuse barrels had heavy wall thickness, and to be safe that no one has honed it out too far, I would have someone that knows how to use a wall thickness gage measure them. The bores for these guns could be from .775 to .800 and maybe slightly over. I don't think in these guns you will find a wall thickness less than .035 in the critical areas. As to the pitting, I had read that if you were worried about it, to fire it in an open area and find the wad, if it is not torn or chewed up, I wouldn't worry about the pits. As to shells, RST makes shells for this vintage guns and I would stay below 7,500 psi. range.
