    Dennis,
I would not argue the readings that David got from your gun. The only thing I would want to know is was his gage made for an L.C. Smith. I don't have other gun manufactures chamber lengths, tapers and chamber dimensions, so I can't tell you about them. L.C. Smith from 1907 from a Hunter Arms spec sheet the chamber length is 2.5625 or 2 9/16", and bore was .650. In 1935 chamber length was 2.5625 and bore was .652.

Being curious I made up a few different chamber gages for 16 ga. according to the specs from Hunter Arms, .745 at the largest diameter to .732 with a 14 deg. taper for 2 9/16". This gage went in 2 17/32" on a circa 1919 and 2 9/16" on a circa 1939.

As for yours this is what makes it interesting, not only in the chambers but by then the Single Sighting Plane was a standard option, who knows maybe someone ordered it without it.

If the index card is new and it is opened right in the chamber and conforms to the taper then it really can't go any further into the forcing cone because of the taper there.
    That is my opinion.
