Jim, I own an Ideal 20 (1925 vintage) that has the oval 2-3/4" stamp that, I assume, went back to Hunter for chamber modification and was stamped at that time. I don't recall seeing examples of the 2-3/4" oval stamps on anything but Hunter guns nor do I recall seeing the oval stamp ( 2-3/4" or 3") on guns pre-dating the introduction of the 12 ga 3" guns. However, I also own a 3" 16 ga gun dated 1907 that has a simple line stamp "3 inch chambers".
