John the one thing I would do is to look very careful at the buttplate and see if it looks like it is a replacement and does the wood around the butt look like it has been refinished? The only real way to put a new butt plate on or recoil pad (yuk)is to grind it close and then put in on and hand file/sand to meet the wood perfect. In doing so some of the stock wood will get nicked and has to be touched up or redone. If the stock doesn't fit, which I guess it doesn't, then put a period recoil pad on, stain it, put tea, oil, ashes on to make it look old.
