Wow, this is a surprise. We are taking the "Challenge" so seriously that we are going to rewrite the rules to make sure that all can participate and anyone can win. I will not make all of my thoughts known in this post, but I will illustrate how the desired effect can be reached, not in a half hearted way but all the way. The only way we can achieve the apparently desired result is the make the shoot fun for everyone and the winner chosen by a method that does not involve score at all. Entry fee would be cost of targets plus a fee that would be divided into shares, one share for the winner's prize, one share for the charity. The winner's name would be drawn out of a hat, in other words, a participant prize. By doing this, all competitive shooters and most serious gun guys would lose interest in the challenge and it would die by the second year. I can get involved with a "raffle" without leaving home. The "Challenge" is a competition and it should remain a competition. The proposed 50 bird sporting clays qualifier is an impossible dream. The sporting clays course has been oversubscribed for years and Bill Kempfler can not possibly accommodate the additional sporting clays rounds that would be required by the shooters wishing to qualify for the Challenge. It is unfortunate that not everyone can qualify for the finals. I am one that will never again qualify for the finals after qualifying two times in previous years. However, regardless of my inability to compete on the finals level, I will continue to attend the Southern because it is a wonderful event, not because I feel I must shoot the finals to have a good time. There may be some minor change in the team selection that would make sense, but making winners out of losers is not the way.
