    12ga specialtry grade Archived Message

I have a 1925 12 ga specialty grade with 28" mod/full barrels. this gun was my grandfathers and I grew up shooting it on both ducks and upland game. When steel came and quail and pheasants left Maryland, I retired it. I now have the time to travel to the birds (read retired!) and have two questions as I want to shoot the gun. The gun was restocked in 1968 and appears to be in good shape. The fit is very good with no visible space between the wood and the receiver plates. I am told that the stock should be eased, but I am reluctant to mess with a tight fit. Is it true that there should be a visible joint around the plate and along the fingers or should I leave well enough alone? Secondly, I thought this gun had an automatic safety. When shot and then opened the safety does not come on. It does work when applied manually.Could this gun have had an auto safety? or was it manual?
If the gun needs work are there any good smiths in the Baltimore area?
    Thanks, far any comments.
