You are absolutely right! Cost is and always has been a big factor in this game. And, when it comes to real value, field-grade Smith guns have historically offered it in spades. But...have you priced a Field-grade in good, serviceable shape these days? Nobody's giving away the better examples. Pre-1914 Double O (00) guns are even a bit more, and the graded Smiths have always collected a premium price, let alone any sub-gauge examples. In a local gunshop here in Denver, there are two examples of very well-preserved (arguably unfired) Field-grade guns (a 12 and a 20) that will set you back a sum that would allow access to a lesser English boxlock (they would call it a "bramble-divider"), perhaps even a far-lighter, sweet, 16-bore. In the interests of "education" I was merely offering Mr. Roll Crimp a small insight into the bigger world of double-guns that exists beyond this web page.
