Sometimes the serial number will be stamped on the back/inletted side of the trigger guard. Remove the trigger guard and check for the correct number. If the number stamped on the backside is correct to the frame; then the engraved number on the front side of the guard is an obvious factory mistake missed by the inspector. Unfortunately, if there is no number there so that you can actually confirm a mistake; in the "real" world, dealers and collectors will always consider the guard a replacment regardless of the one digit difference.
