    TRAP TARGET PATTERNS Archived Message

Clay target shooters are a breed not found with most other gunning sports. I do not shoot too much skeet because most shooters at one of the gun clubs I belong to (Weston Gun Glub, Weston CT) seem to perfer skeet more than trap. Of course there are the Sporting and Five Stand gunners that profess that these two games are the most challenging, and I am inclined to believe that. But there are a couple of regulars at the trap lines that do a good amount of trap shooting and excel in the game. There are those that shoot with Perazzis, K80s, M12s, and other great guns, but only a couple of us use vintage guns. Mine of course is the Smith Single barrel gun. Another good shooter on the line uses an A H Fox single barrel gun. We often compare the hits made on the shattering the clays.
We discuss the merits of these older guns and have come to really believe that when these guns were made, the one finishing the chokes really took the pains to do the job right. If the more recent makes of guns had a bit more time put on finishing the chokes, maybe they too would shatter the targets. Though I do not use a SxS for trap, I have often wondered what they may be doing at the traps. On some occasions, I bring out my Baker Elite Single and that gun also does a remarkable job on the targets.
Have any of you Smith users found that a Trap grade SxS preforms pretty much as the single?
It would be interesting to know.
