I'm a firearms dealer who has been consigned a shotgun to sell. The owner believes it to be an L.C. Smith Specialty Grade. I'm not much of a doubles guy, but I'm afraid I may have to tell her it's not what she thinks. Here's my observations that raise my concern:
* Neither LC Smith nor Hunter Arms is marked anywhere on the gun, although there are what I think are Hunter Arms proofs on the bottoms of the barrels. No words nor numbers anywhere on the exterior of the gun.
* Both the water table & the barrel bottoms are prominently marked "FIELD".
* I'm interpreting the s/n on the water table as FWS5769. The factory records at Cody show this as a Field Grade Featherweight shipped in 1946.
* There's a considerable gap in the fit at the rear of the forend.
My guess is that this is a Hunter Arms L.C. Smith Field Grade that has been nicely engraved and the wood carved in the oak leaf pattern, and possible with the wood replaced, but I could be completely off track on this.

Does that make sense? Any guidance as to value?
If it's inappropriate for a dealer to post, please accept my apologies & disregard this posting. The gun is not for sale now.
