All I know about damascus comes from Dr Gaddy, and a little reading. Until Dave Miles sent me his saved pics previously posted on DoubleGunBBS, it looked like even that information had been 'lost' with his passing. Lots of internet stuff out there among the custom knife makers, little of which applies to gun barrels. I also wish 'someone' would archive LOTS of high resolution close up damascus pics with CONFIRMED maker's names and type. The problem is that the many brl makers had their own names for the 2, 3, and 4-iron crolles. Clearly 'Twist', 'Stub Twist', and 'Wire Twist' are the lowest grades, and you are correct that 'Star', 'Bernard', 'Oxford', and the many other names placed on the brls by distributors, are simply damascus that could be 2, 3, 4 or 6 iron crolle. 'Laminette' and 'Laminated' are also damascus variants, with higher (and maybe better?) steel to iron ratios. Sadly, we'll probably need to find a metalurgical textbook from the late 1800s to confirm some of our ideas.
