Oscar's first article in DGJ on case hardening cites the actual depth as 0.002". Not sure how/why/what "chips" as it seems that if it is truly bone/wood charcoal heated to 725C and then quenched it would be "in" the metal, not "on" the surface. It has been observed that the colors on the repro of the "other gun" do fade/wear/"peel". Guess all things are possible??!! Best. BILL
