SGT, thanks for that very interesting inside information about how Mr. Kraus ran his engraving department. It's fascinating to me how little has changed since then regarding the division of labor and billable hours. I have a friend who manages the service department for a large auto dealership and they manage their labor force the same way. Techs with the least experience and fewest professional certifications and lowest wages do the oil changes, tire changes, brake jobs etc...while the higher paid "expert" mechanics do the more complex work like transmissions, engine overhauls etc... Just goes to show you that productivity, automation and profitability were as important to businesses then as now. I agree it's a bit odd that Kraus did some of the mundane bookkeeping and a waste of his talent but he probably had to do it himself if he were fudging the work records a bit to benefit the greater good and keep everyone in the shop employed. That was probably a call that only he could make and he'd need to know the details if he ever had to explain it to one of the Hunter Brothers or corporate bean counters!
