Great thread here. I think you'll actually find quite a few more Grade 2s and 3s with the circle and ovals than not. I have three Grade 2 20s, all with no cirlces and all with different barrel lengths; 28, 30 and 32" respectively. One was found in Australia of all places and all have a bobwhite quail and tufts of grass on the lockplates. The engraving was most likely done by the same person on each of the three I have as they look almost identical. I bought them years ago because they were different (with no circles) and also due to the three different barrel lengths. Of the many 2s and 3s I've seen or handled at shows over the years, most had the cirlces and ovals in place. Someone mentioned a template for engraving and this seems to be the logical theory for these grade levels.Terrific site and great information you all are bringing here.
