Jason, what Revdocdrew said is correct, but I would like to add to it by saying that if you didn't break open, re-cock, your gun and tried to put the forend back on you would put a lot of strain on the "J" spring and could possible crack the wood. This is why a lot of Field Grades have replacement forends, they were lost in the field because the "J" spring became loose on the barrel lug causing the forend to fall off. A very small Crescent wrench (4") works great and doesn't get in the way. You could also use a thin shank screwdriver and put it between the cocking rods and re-cock them also.
