The grade 2 guns in SN. Ranges 300,xxx to 361,xxx were Extractor guns. Both the 1st and 2nd type joint check or barrel stop was used on extractor guns only to the best of my knowledge. The transitional engraving pattern that you describe and shown in a latter post were generally found between 1890 & 1900. By 1902 the No.2 pattern had the birds either in the circle or without the circles. I have a Cody letter on a 2E dated 1898. It does not have the 1st type barrel stop.
