Gentleman. With regard to the Hawkins Pad,the first pad was the one with the hearts, patented to Frank D. Hawkins on Dec. 16th,1919 Pat.No. 1325152. It was the Model 25. The Cushion Pad Co. of Sioux Falls,South Dakota also offered a Model 32 that had the straight serrations/vents that their advertisements said was for the 12 gauge shotgun however, the Marlin Firearms Co. used and advertised this pad on rifles. There are no patents that I know of foe the model 32. Therefore, I can only assume based on the evidence and numerical order of model numbers that the No. 25 (heart vents) was original Hawkins Pad. I have pictures of both pads in the new L.C.Smith book in the anatomy chapter.Hope this helps! John Houchins
