Matt, "doing the wood a favor" means less recoil energy to split the already thin and fragile stock that all sidelocks have. Further, most older guns have the head of the buttstock oil saturated-which means it is "soft" and easily split/cracked. Hence low base loads are recommended. Merry Christmas. BILL
