If one can access it, in late 1930, there was an article by Charles Askins Sr. in the American Rifleman called "Magnum Shotguns" in which Askins explores the Smith Wildfowler, the Fox HE grade and the then brand new Ithaca NID 10 gauge 3 1/2" magnum. Using the then new SuperX loads of 1 3/8s for the 3" 12s and 1 5/8" for the big ten, all three guns performed very well.

Askins noted no overbore for the Smith, whereas early HE Foxes were bored .750" and later models .740".
