James: Friend, I sincerely wish we had known of you and the items passed down from your grandfather just a little earlier, as those items would have been fantastic additions to the new LC Smith book that is presently being published. As Mr Kraus was a most creative engraver, I would not be surprised if his personal guns do not fit, or conform to teh standard cataloged grades; therefore, it is possible each piece would be unique. I would be most appreciative of photos; and, once I had same, could assist you in determining what/how to classify each piece. As FYI, I research and write articles about Smith guns and Hunter Arms employees. An article soon to be published in the Double Gun Journal will be about Charles Jerred, an engraver that apprenticed under Mr. Kraus and later became a very close friend. I have wanted to write something about Mr. Kraus, and have made contact with a gentleman who knew him personally (fished with Charles and Mr. Kraus; but this association was after his retirement from the gunworks. I have also seen a number of Kraus artifacts (his tool box, engraving vise, magnafying glass and holder, engraving tools, engraving sketches, etc); but it would be great to talk with a family member and learn more of "the man". If you wish to contact me directly, my address is thomas.archer@charter.net and my direct line is 706/769-4932. We, as members of the LCSCA, are diligently attempting to preserve as much history and knowledge of the LC Smith gun and the people who made them as we possibly can. Regards, Tom Archer
