Pitting looks like grains of pepper if slight and like small, grain of sand size, holes in the barrel surface-inside or out if severe. A bulge can be anything from barely palpable to the fingertips to almost full thickness and bursting from inside to outside. Bulged barrels are a big-BIG CAUTION LIGHT to me.
