You should have your gun examined by someone who is familiar with LC Smith guns.
If the head of the stock has a crack and the wood is dark it is probable that the wood is oil soaked and fragile. The oil would have to be removed, the crack repaired and the head strengthened. There are tutorials on the various collector sites for the various procedures. It is not hard to do the work if you are handy.
